There is nothing like sport to discover the riches of the Cévennes National Park at your own rhythm.
To cater for sports that respect the environment, the Cévennes National Park with its partners have developed an abundance of leisure paths. Over 3,500 signposted kilometres of paths – a record for a natural area in France – may be explored on foot, mountain bike or horseback.
The National Park is crossed by numerous long-distance hiking paths (GR®). These itineraries, created by the French hiking federation, are easily recognised by their famous red and white markings. There are also some local GR de pays, circuits that take a few days to complete and make it possible to discover a massif.
The Park has published 20 topographical guides (topoguides) containing family walks of a few kilometres’ length. Sold in slip covers, these descriptive leaflets cover 275 walks (PR®), totalling 2,449 kilometres of marked trails. They are an excellent tool for discovering the area.
Mountain bikes may be used freely on authorised paths (off-piste cycling is prohibited). Marked trails exist on the Causse Méjean and the Aigoual massif.
You can also hire a guide in order to benefit from professional supervision.
The National Park offers 400 kilometres of marked horse-riding trails. The cradle of horse endurance races, the Park also created the mythical race, “the 160 kilometres of Florac”. This circuit is fully marked, so that the area’s varied scenery can be discovered at leisure.
Gîtes d’étape allow hikers to stay overnight at various points along the trails. The Park has listings of some 100 establishments in the area that corresponds to the 1:100,000 IGN tourist map. This is a simple inventory without any guarantee as to the quality of the services offered. Don’t forget to make a reservation and check the services on offer!
