The mission of the national Park’s Documentation and Archive Centre is to preserve the memory of the Cévennes and make it accessible to the public. This vast task could not be accomplished without the help of the Regional Office for Cultural Affairs and the county archives of the Gard and Lozère. The Centre has been placed under their expert responsibility.
The Association Font-Vive created in 1961 by Dr Jean Pellet of Génolhac, Dr Pierre Richard of Les Vans, Roland Calcat of Les Vans and solicitor Bieau worked towards the creation of the Cévennes Cultural National Park in the 1960s. To this end, it had started to gather works and studies on the Cévennes in the larger sense of the word.
The Documentation and Archive Centre consists of a collection of general documentation on the Cévennes and several collections donated by private individuals, all of which are of interest for those wishing to deepen their knowledge of the region. The Centre also holds two private archives that are particularly concerned with Génolhac and help to understand the way of life of a family of the rural gentry.
The Documentation and Archive Centre makes its database available online. You can use a search engine to search over 14,000 documents by key word, list of recent acquisitions, list of different document collections, etc. This tool enables you to find the works you are interested in before consulting them in the reading room. It can also help you find documents online.
