The territory
Cévennes, Mont Lozère, Aigoual-Lingas, Causses and Gorges...: the territory of the Cévennes National Park is varied in its geography, population and administrative divisions.
Physical geography
The Cévennes National Park – a transitional area between the Massif Central and the plains of Languedoc – is characterised by terrain, geology, hydrography and climate.
Human geography
The Park has over 70,000 inhabitants. They are very unevenly divided over 152 districts: low-density rural areas on the one hand, areas under urban influence on the other. The Park – created in a sparsely populated region that had, for over a century, been subject to an intense population exodus – has seen positive net migration since the 1990s.
The administrative boundaries
The National Park stretches over parts of three départements – Lozère, Gard and Ardèche – and two regions, Languedoc-Roussillon and Rhône-Alpes. Its district councils are grouped together into intercommunalités and pays. Making the public policies of these different participants cohere is one of the challenges of the Park’s future Charter.
