Forests cover more than 45% of Lozère and contribute significantly to the local economy. The wood industry generates numerous jobs, both directly and indirectly. Moreover, forests are managed to protect and fight against erosion. Without calling these uses into question, the national Park works to ensure that biodiversity and the landscape are taken into account in forest management.
Most Cévenol forests have been planted. Following the abandonment of agriculture, forest cover spread widely. With more than 57,000 hectares of forest in the central zone, the Cévennes National Park is France’s largest wooded national park.
The forests in the Park’s central zone have diverse purposes: wood production, protection of the steepest slopes, ecological and scenic interest. The Park works in partnership with the National Forestry Commission (ONF) and private forest managers to develop projects that encourage the biodiversity and quality of forest landscapes.
The National Park works in partnership with the forest management institutions: notably the National Forestry Commission (ONF) and the Regional Centre for Forest Property (CRPF).
The challenges for forestry on the Park’s territory are numerous. They concern preserving forest biodiversity, protecting sensitive habitats and soils, and the integrity of the landscape, etc. However, conservation must not be dissociated from the economic reality linked to forestry activity.
